Text 5 Jun Sonnet 18 (by Shakespeare) — Bo, H4A

Sonnet 18 (Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day)  - Shakespeare

The sonnet is about the author (Shakespeare) comparing someone to a summer’s day. He founds that the beauty of nature does not compare to the beauty of that person.
I think it’s really beautiful how he verbalizes everything throughout the sonnet and I like that the beginning of the sonnet is a question. It’s like he’s thinking of how he must describe that person, but he can’t compare her or him to anything, because even the beautiful summer isn’t as beautiful as that person. In the second part:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed;

He kind of describes the ‘imperfections’ of the summer: I think that ‘the eye of heaven’ must be the sun, so he says that sometimes the sun is too hot. In the sentence ‘And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;’ I think he means that the sun often goes behind the clouds.
In the last two sentences of that part, he says that everything beautiful will lose its beauty, eventually. But he says that the person’s beauty and youth will not fade. He also says that death can’t claim that person because she or he will live forever in his ‘eternal lines’.
In the very last sentences he says that so long as there are people living, so long this poem will live and that makes the person which the poem is about immortal, because that person will live forever in his words.

The picture I chose for this sonnet shows the sun behind the clouds. That shows that even the most beautiful and powerful things will fade/go away, eventually. And that’s what is this sonnet is about, even the beauty of a summer’s day will fade, but the beauty of your beloved one doesn’t.

I found these quotes and I put them in the same order as the story. It’s a story about life.

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

Buddha

Life isn’t worth living unless you’re willing to take some big chances and go for broke.

Eliot Wiggington

Life is much shorter than I imagined it to be.

Abraham Cahan

Life’s hard. It’s even harder when you’re stupid.

John Wayne

In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.

Robert frost

People change, things go wrong. Just remember life goes on.

This song describe the impact of your decision, which road you take. The singer was off for some time, but by taken another road he knows. What does he knows? He knows how the day sounds, but only in his own way. He make his own road, with his own mind, nobody else can make the road like he did. That is because somebody else makes the road different, is taken different decisions.

The song explains you can make your own road as much beautiful, but you have to do it, don’t stand there but just do it. Make decisions, it can be hard but it’s worth it because that’s life.

Text 28 May The Road Not Taken - Yara 28-5-2012

I choose this picture by this poem because when I heard the poem, I immediately thought about a road in the forest. That image gave me a happy and peaceful feeling.

This poem is about making choices.

If you really want to reach a goal in life, I think it doesn’t matter which way or road you choose to get there. It doesn’t matter if you choose the hard, easy, known or unknown road. If you really want to reach your goal you’ll reach it anyway

This picture shows two roads side by side and I think that symbolises that each road will lead to the same end if you want that badly enough.

Text 28 May The road not taken

I think this poem is about making choices in your life. Everyone lives his own live, and you always have to make choices. The two diverged roads remind me of important choices in life. You can make your own choices but you can also make a choice because of your friends or family. I think it is very important to make your own choices instead of following just someone else. One road is very grassy, the other one is more travelled. So what would you choose? Would you choose the simple and safe way or would you choose what your heart is telling you. I think you always have to listen to your heart. The choice you then make would be the best. You will never come far in life if you are just doing what other do. You will never know where the road ends up.. You just have to make a choice.

Text 27 May “Out out-” Anon-27-05-2012

There is an man sawing in his back yard  the dust of the wood is flying around. On the back ground you can see beautiful nature, like a mountain range  and the sunset. The sound of the saw penetrates the quiet nature. He works all day and everything went fine until his sister came to say dinner was ready, he startled of his sister and saw trough his hand. The blood spurted out, just like his life. In the hospital he begs to don’t take his hand off. But it was to late he already died when he blew his last breath.

I think it’s a life story. In the beginning everything is fine, then there is a saw how became him fatal. At the end of the poem there is a big mages, if somebody dies you need to life on until you die yourself.

Text 27 May “Out, out-” Otto- 27-05-2012

You see a dude with a buzz saw. That is snarling and rattling. You can see the dust flying around.  In the background is a peacefully landscape made of mountain rages on dee the sunset. You can hear the buzz saw drilling trough the peacefull landscape. That dude has worked all day and everything went well. The day was almoste done. But wen his siter came along and says “Supper” he startled and cut right trough his arm and lost almost his hand. His live flowed out of his boddy just as his blood spurted out. In the hospital he begged to the doctor to don’t cut his hand of. But the doctor didn’t belief anymore that he would survive and when the boy blew out his last breath, they all wend back to there own lives. I think the beginning is very creepy. Because you see a peaceful landscape and trough that you hear loutly a buzz saw snarling and rattling. Like if a story is at his top and that any moment something terrible will happen. And it did happen. I see at the end of the poem a message, it’s like: everything can happen if you like it or not. Out of nothing. And everything will go on despite what happend.

Text 22 May The Open Window - Kars 20-05-2012

It’s a strange story whit a very strange tension. You know that something will happen. Also the place where the story happens is a bit scary. I image a small house in the middle of nowhere hidden behind the hills of the English countryside.  Also the tittle and the midpoint: The open Window gave a scary sphere.

The story tells you a sad story about a women how lost her husband and brothers but at the end of the story you get to know that the is a liar. It looks like of the writer makes a joke with the reader.  He lets you think that the husband and her 2 brothers are dead but it isn’t true.

I think that the writer will tell you that not everyone can be trusted.

The picture is chose is a painting by Dali, in the painting you see a woman that is Gala she was the lover of Dali.  The reason choose it is of course the open window and the mysterious sphere of the painting.

Text 21 May the open window by jamy osinga

The story made me feel confused, because I am not sure which of the two people is actually insane. I think that the aunt is more insane than the man, because she had planned everything. What also makes me feel confused is that the aunt wrote the story. It seemed to me that it was written in the man’s point of view. The story made me think differently about reality, because your reality is not always the truth. And is not necessarily  the reality of others.

I think the story is written well because she wrote about a window and not a door. We have already talked about this in class. The window is a symbol for looking forward to something, like the return of her family.

The short story means to me: false, underhand, confidence, relation, believe.
In the short story I thought the writer not only tells you a story, but also wants to teach you something.
I think what the writer wants to tell is that as a reader at the beginning of a story you can believe what is narrated but at the end you only know if it is real.
I also think that the author wants you to know that you do not need to take what you get told, but spiritualized everything need to know, so in a book read the whole story. In the class we have talked about the window having two different things to symbolize: first a kind of exciting not really relaxed feeling about those people who are gone but have not come back despite there still being someone waiting for them. Afterwords it symbolizes a kind of image if deceit. I think it also shows how the same window can be seen in other ways, depending the story behind it.
